Honest comparisons

Vellum vs. Bluebeam, Acrobat, and Drawboard

PDF markup tools are built around annotating a page. Vellum treats a technical drawing as geometry. If you're looking for a Bluebeam alternative that runs on Mac and in the browser, here is the honest side-by-side.

Vellum vs. Bluebeam Revu

An established name in construction PDF markup.

Bluebeam Revu is a long-standing tool in construction markup, and it shows in its takeoff tooling and Studio sessions. Vellum takes a different approach: rather than annotating on top of the page, it works with the geometry beneath it, in the browser, on any machine.

Where Bluebeam is strong

  • A long track record in construction PDF markup
  • Quantity takeoff, counts, and estimating
  • Studio sessions and projects for team review
  • Overlay and compare drawings (Core and above)

Where Vellum is different

  • CAD-style editing (offset, trim, extend, mirror, fillet) and typed exact input, all in Pro. Revu's Offset tool requires its Max plan
  • The full workspace in a browser on any machine, including Mac
  • A plain-language drafting assistant and a connector for your own Claude, both in the browser. Revu's AI features require its Max plan, and its MCP connector also requires Revu desktop on Windows
  • Direct DXF export back to CAD, which is not among Revu's documented export formats

Choose Vellum when the work is design review and drafting on drawings, and the geometry has to survive the trip back to CAD.

Vellum vs. Adobe Acrobat

Adobe is excellent at documents. Vellum is built for drawings and linework.

Acrobat is a general-purpose PDF editor, with a capable comment toolbar (clouds, polygons, callouts) and a calibrated measuring tool that can snap to paths, endpoints, and intersections. Outside that tool, markups do not snap to the drawing, and DXF is not among Acrobat's documented export formats, so linework does not travel back to CAD.

Where Acrobat is strong

  • Document workflows: forms, signatures, OCR, and redaction
  • Real-time comment sync in shared reviews
  • Drawing markup: clouds, polygons, callouts, and a calibrated measuring tool
  • AI Assistant that can run some PDF tools by chat

Where Vellum is different

  • Drafting and markup tools snap to the drawing's geometry, not only measurements
  • Scale-aware drafting with live dimensions and typed input
  • Object extraction, region fill, trim, and extend that work on the underlying linework
  • DXF export moves geometry into CAD

Keep Acrobat for document workflows. Use Vellum when the markup has to be drafted to scale, edited as geometry, and sent back to CAD.

Vellum vs. Drawboard

Built for pen markup. Vellum adds CAD-style drafting.

Drawboard focuses on pen and touch markup: it runs on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and the web, and it offers content snapping and calibrated measurement, with Drawboard Projects adding task lists and issues. Where Vellum differs is drafting: CAD-style editing commands (offset, trim, extend, mirror, fillet) and direct DXF export, which is not among Drawboard's export formats.

Where Drawboard is strong

  • Natural pen and touch markup on tablets
  • Native apps on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, plus a web app
  • Content snapping and calibrated measurement
  • Task lists and issues for drawing coordination in Projects

Where Vellum is different

  • Typed slopes, roof pitch, and math expressions while drafting new geometry
  • Offset, trim, extend, mirror, and fillet
  • Object extractor, vector screenshot, and region fill in any modern browser
  • DXF export back to CAD

Choose Vellum when redlines need to become drafted, dimensioned geometry that continues in CAD.
